California’s oldest Armenian Church has planned a “cool island adventure” for its 114th Summer Christian Education Program.
The First Armenian Presbyterian Church of Fresno will present “Soul Survivor Vacation Bible School” on Sunday, June 26, through Thursday, June 30, 2011.
The weeklong VBS program will take place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Church Campus, 430 South First Street at historic Huntington Boulevard near Downtown Fresno.
Registration is $10 per child ages Kindergarten through Grade Six or a maximum of $20 per family and the fee includes a logo theme shirt. VBS registration is available by calling Janet Thompson at (559) 974-9730 or e-mailing thompsonabode@hotmail.com.
The VBS theme is “Be Strong/Persevere/It’s a Battle Out There” based Ephesians 6: 10-18. Students will embark on their island adventure by journeying through a variety of Bible stories. Students will get a glimpse of heaven, meet Samson the strong man, feel the heat of the fiery furnace with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, visit the Apostle Paul just after his shipwreck on the Island of Malta, and have an opportunity to toss crowns before the Throne of God.
Each nightly adventure will include awesome island games, scrumptious island snacks, and an opportunity to share God’s Love at the “service station.” At the end of each nightly adventure, students will join two contestants on Soul Survivor Island as they face the challenges of the day and learn to put on the Armor of God.
The VBS program will also offer a special adult seminar series on “The End Times” during the Soul Survivor Island program for children.
Forty immigrants from Marsovan chartered FAPC in a rented Fresno hall on July 25, 1897. The congregation formally joined the family of Presbyterian Churches in October of that same year.
The boyhood church of filmmaker J. Michael Hagopian and authors William Saroyan and A.I. Bezzerides, FAPC today is a multigenerational evangelical congregation drawn from the Old and New Worlds.
Reverend Mgrdich Melkonian is the Senior Pastor of the Church, Reverend Eric E. Thompson is the Interim Associate Pastor, and Janet Thompson is the Director of the 114th Annual Vacation Bible School Program.
FAPC is a transitional member congregation of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church and a member congregation of the Armenian Evangelical Union of North America. The 2011 theme of the congregation is “A New Community.”
