Lance Mayer and Gay Myers, independent paintings conservators based at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, give a sneak preview of their unprecedented research on Thomas Cole's painting techniques from their upcoming book 'American Painters' Techniques: The Colonial Period to 1860'. Their research sheds new light on many aspects of Cole's methods, from the influence of the "tone" of the Old Masters to his disputes with artists' suppliers, as well as Cole's choice of pigments and other art materials. Conservators for many large and small museums as well as private collectors, they have published widely on American painters' techniques, and are the first to look at all the written evidence of how these painters painted.
