Iconography and Iconology: Interpreting “The Synagogue” by Max Beckmann

Artist Max Beckmann was the subject of Art History Assistant Professor Amy K. Hamlin’s doctoral dissertation from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. She is currently writing the book, “Beckmann: Allegory and Art History.” Another book, the anthology, “Methodological Studies of Christianity in the History of Art” will be published later this year.
