Did you hear the one about the mother-in-law that worked as a radio show sex therapist and got awarded an MBE for services to the entertainment industry? Her husband was a narcoleptic, closet cross-dresser with post-war traumatic disorder, her daughter can barely communicate, even with the aid of badly-made hand puppets and her evil-minded prodigal son is trying to push the entire dysfunctional mess right over the edge.
Yep. Rubber Ear are back in town.
After last year’s sensational ‘Sex, Chips and Ouzo’ tour, writer and director Kathleen Ruddy and Rubber Ear are following up the success with ‘The Devil Wears Primark’ and touring island-wide, from Pomos to Paralimni.
The plot centres around a dementedly unbalanced London-Cypriot family that comes together to ‘celebrate’ the imminent MBE award for Athenoulla Georgiou, their controlling mother and wife, whose questionable radio sex therapy advice to the UK listeners extends to members of her own family – whether they want it or not.
As with all of Ruddy’s previous award-winning plays – ‘Sex, chips and Ouzo’, ‘Check Your Coupon’ and ‘Glasgow Hard Tickets’, the dialogue bristles with inventiveness and sharp humour, the action is unpredictable and the plot twists and turns in a maze of surprises.
