Scare stories about the fate of boys are proliferating in the media. We hear that they are falling behind, that their brains are so different from those of girls that they have to be taught in “boy-friendly” classes, that they are ill-equipped to comprehend major works of literature, that they are aggressive, unemotional, and even uncaring – all the things that girls are not. Are these stories based on fact or on stereotyped fictions? And does it matter?
