The Miss Firecracker Contest is the hilarious and heartfelt account of one woman's quest for acceptability in a small southern town -- a quest that involves tap-dancing, self-improvement, roman candles, soul searching, and a hoop skirt that won't behave. When Carnelle Scott (known locally as “Miss Hot Tamale”) enters the local beauty pageant, poignant eccentricity and outright hilarity ensue. Although the play has been described as a “torrential downpour of humor” by The New York Times, at the heart of this crowd-pleasing comic play is the story of a family's struggle to accept each other, and the rather unconventional ways in which they go about it.
