There's nothing like a hot summer's night of stars to get the party started and that's exactly what the Spirit Festival brings to you Saturday 19 Feb 2011 with a FREE outdoor concert in Mullawarriburka (RYMILL PARK) from 6pm with Aria and Deadly award winning star DAN SULTAN headlining a fantastic bill of soul, blues, jazz, hip hop and cabaret with the black queen of the Kimberley MARY G, Karnage & Darknis, Lady Lash, Iwantja Band and Jess Beck to be hosted by MC Jimblah and Pascoe Braun.
Sunday 20th Feb Mullawarriburka (RYMILL PARK)11am: Immerse yourself in our day long program of traditional and contemporary dance, song and arts from the desert to the sea. We premiere Our Spirit Our Song a mass choir brought together especially for this festival. From the Flinders Ranges, the Adnyamathanha Women's Choir, from the River Murray, Coorong and Lower Lakes region the Ngarrindjeri Miminar Kaikian Choir and from Adelaide the Kaurna Plains School and Kurruru Youth Choirs. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear these living languages.
The Cultural dance begins with the Kaurna nation and Taikurtinna; from the Ngarrindjeri nation Tal-kin-jeri; Rikina Inma dancers from the APY lands community of Amata and celebrating Torres Strait Islander culture Baiwa Dance Company bring Warupu Uu 'echo of the drum' to Adelaide. Fusing the traditional and contemporary internationally recognised choreographer Frances Rings (Bangarra) and Gina Rings (Bangarra) present a collaborative work with Leigh Warren Dancers-Songlines, a physical mapping of the songlines of the body while Kurruru Youth Arts perform an excerpt of Min Min and from the APY lands the Mimili Mob bring desert style breakdancing to town.
Our Sunday concert stage line-up hosts the very best in local musicians; Nancy Bates, Glenn Skuthorpe, Krista Pav, Paul Grant, Bridget Dean, Tempestt Sumner, Warren Milera Band and the MERRg. Then there's the art! Our Visual Arts Market, workshops and cultural demonstrations are unique opportunities to engage with artists and purchase work from a range of mediums; canvas, fibre and sculpture from remote, regional and urban South Australian and Torres Strait Islander artists.
For children of all ages we have play areas, workshops, bush animal displays, we've even got a jumping water slide! The Spirit Festival is located in the shadiest part of Mullawirraburka (Rymill Park) its cool and breezy and is a great place for sitting with families and enjoying and sharing our culture-the oldest living culture in the world! Food and drinks are available or bring a picnic. The Spirit Festival is an alcohol and drug free event. All welcome!
