The Thirty-Six Views of Mt Fuji February 4, 2010

Rising majestically with a near-perfect cone shape, Mount Fuji has been a favorite subject of Japanese artists from the earliest times. Mount Fuji was a daily presence in the lives of the citizens of the shogun's capital of Edo, and it was also visible from many portions of the eastern portion of the great To-kaido- Highway that linked Edo with the ancient capital of Kyoto. This exhibition features 18 of the prints that make up Utagawa Hiroshige's 'Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji.' The series was completed just before his death and published the following year.
