Thomas Tafirenyika Mapfumo is a Zimbabwean musician known as "The Lion of Zimbabwe" and "Mukanya" for his immense popularity and for the political influence he wields through his music. While the songs are often politically pointed, the music has a lilting, hypnotic pulse which Mapfumo and his Blacks Unlimited band created by transposing the mbira (African thumb piano) to electric guitars, bass, drums and horns in the late 1970s, then blended in blues and jazz elements to create a style called "chimurenga."
