Hawks provide a number of identification challenges. Both plumage similarities among species and great individual variation within a species can make it hard to confidently identify perched raptors. Lighting, distance, and fleeting looks can be frustrating when a bird is in flight. Luckily, we can use general shape and behavior to categorize types of hawks: buteos, accipiters, falcons and eagles. From there, we can use other clues to narrow our ID to species. During the lecture, we'll use slides and handouts to learn this process. During the field trip, we'll travel to a well-known eastern Massachusetts hawk watch site. We'll practice our new skills in the field, learn about hawk migration, and hopefully witness a grand spectacle of hundreds or even thousands of hawks riding the thermals as they make their way south. - - Open to anyone age 16 or older.
