Whether you are just getting started observing birds, or you have been birding awhile but would like to develop your expertise, these programs are for you. Programs in this series are designed to give you tools to gain confidence finding and identifying birds on your own. Programs will be paced so that everyone will have plenty of time to see the birds and work through the identification process. We'll practice a simple, logical approach to field identification, discuss tips for making the most of your time in the field, and introduce you to the wealth of resources available to birders. - - Hawks and owls can be difficult to identify using a field guide alone, but differences in shape, size and behavior make the process easier. We will explore the Merrimack River, Parker River NWR and Salisbury State Park looking for eagles, hawks and owls. Winter is an exciting time to be in the field, since it is our only opportunity to see wintering species such as Snowy and Short-eared Owls and Rough-legged Hawk. The mouth of the Merrimack River hosts many Bald Eagles as inland waters freeze. We will take time to closely observe these raptor species, work through the id process, and discuss adaptations that allow them to survive our harsh winters. We will also take the opportunity to view wintering waterfowl and any other winter specialties we encounter. Lunch, not included in fee, will be at a heated restaurant. Registration is required.
