Mathew Nuqingaq is a leader in the arts community of Nunavut, where he holds the distinction of having co-designed and created the mace for the territory's new Legislature. Born in Qikiqtarjuaq (Broughton Island), the multi-talented jeweller, silversmith, sculptor and Inuit drum dancer was also past chairperson of the Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association, a member of the board of directors of the Nunavut Arts Council and the Aboriginal Advisory Committee of the Canada Council for the Arts. Currently residing in Iqaluit, he is a jewellery and silversmith instructor at the Nunatta campus of Arctic College.
The Guild Shop proudly introduces Nuqingaq's first solo exhibition, Treasures from North of 60. This exhibition features fine and contemporary Inuit jewellery based on Inuit traditions and imagery. Incorporating brass, gold, and silver, as well as ivory and precious stones from Nunavut, his beautifully handcrafted pieces introduce groundbreaking trends in the wearable art of the Arctic.
