Event celebrates music of Tropicalia, a Brazilian cultural movement
Premiere Brazilian Tropicalia party in Indianapolis, featuring DJ. Kyle Long presenting a mix of Brazilian rhythms. Friday May 15th, 9pm to 3am at the Upper Room, 929 E. Westfield Blvd, Indianapolis, IN 46220. Admission is $8 at the door.
Tropicalia was a cultural movement in Brazil formed in response to the oppressive military dictatorship that ruled the country from 1964 to 1985. Tropicalia encompassed theatre, music, poetry and visual arts among other forms. The musical manifestation of this movement was led by Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes, Tom Ze, Gal Costa and Jorge Ben. The music created by these artists transcended Brazilian borders to influence musicians such as Beck, David Byrne, Kurt Cobain and many others.
Tropicalismo explored the concept of cultural cannibalism, mixing elements of Brazilian arts with avant-garde and psychedelic styles.
DJ. Kyle Long will present a mix of Tropicalia and other Brazilian styles such as Samba, Forro, and Bossa Nova.
Tropicalia is presented by Artur Silva and Kyle Long, the organizers of Indianapolis’ Brazilian Carnaval Party.
Everyone is invited to come experience Tropicalia by joining us in an evening of music and dance!
