Join us at Fort Ancient State Memorial, Saturday January 17, 2009 from 1-3 for a day of prehistoric winter survival. Fort Ancient is a 2,000 year old earthen enclosure, built by the Hopewell around 100AD. This earthen enclosure consists of 3.5 miles of earthen walls enclosing 100 acres. Winter is the best time of year to view the walls cleared of summer’s vegetation.
Come out and explore the site, place yourself in the world of the people who built Fort Ancient. Could you survive without your store bought coat, warm car, winter boots, and your lighter? By stopping at our five survival stations, along the Earthwork Trail, you will learn about the skills Ohio’s first people used to live during the winter months; fire, shelter, navigation, food, and first aid. Today these are called survival skills, but had you been here 2,000 years ago, it would just be another day of the same old routine.
