The Wisconsin Chamber Choir, one of Madison’s finest choral ensembles, wraps up its season of Bacchus, Bach, and Broadway with the final “B” – music from the Broadway stage, on June 5, 2010 at First United Methodist Church – one block off the State Capitol on Wisconsin Ave. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
Madison, Wisconsin’s Isthmus newspaper praised the WCC’s recent performance of Bach’s St. John Passion as “superbly disciplined, of beautifully balanced sonority.” In the June 5 Broadway program the WCC demonstrates its versatility with an evening of lighter fare destined to delight choral music fans of all ages.
The evening will feature selections from Leonard Bernstein’s Candide including choral arrangements of the favorites “Make Our Garden Grow,” “The Best of All Possible Worlds,” “It Must be So,” and “This World.” The WCC’s own Julie Hutchinson will perform the Bernstein’s tour de force for coloratura soprano, “Glitter and Be Gay.”
A 2010 Broadway Concert would not be complete without recognition of the 80th birthday of Stephen Sondheim, represented by arrangements from A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum, A Little Night Music, Company, Merrily We Roll Along, Sweeney Todd, and Into the Woods.
Other choral numbers include George Gershwin’s peppy Stairway to Paradise and Sing of Spring, a madrigal-like piece Gershwin composed for the film, Damsels in Distress. Individual choir members will sing selections from their favorite shows including Spamalot, The Music Man, and Wonderful Town. Veteran music theatre singer/actor Gail Becker-Koppa, a recent addition to WCC, will perform Stephen Schwartz’s powerful song “Meadowlark,” from The Baker’s Wife. The evening will showcase the talents of individual choir members and should not be missed.
The concert will be held Saturday, June 5, 2010 at First United Methodist Church, 1 block west of the Capitol Square (203 Wisconsin Avenue) at 7:30 pm.
