A lecture on the root cause of our environmental crisis will be given by yoga master Balakhilya das on June 5 in Kelowna and June 7 in Vernon.
Balakhilya das does not fit the image one might conjure up of a swami or holy man rooted in Vedic wisdom, according to local yoga club members.
His robes are replaced with ordinary clothing, often wearing a baseball cap and carrying a guitar.
Born and raised on a farm in North Carolina, at his lectures one can detect a slight southern drawl that has softened over the years do to extensive world travel and interaction with various cultures.
Balakhilya das is able to pass down knowledge that he has learned from his spiritual master.
This method of handing down knowledge is known as a disciplic succession which historically is known as Brahma Sampradaya or Gaudiya Sampradaya.
Balakhilya das has traveled the world for many years giving classes in more than 30 countries.
Local yoga practitioners say he has an uncommonly deep understanding of yoga philosophy yet he conveys the message in a clear and simple way.
This topic on the state of our environment today promises to be intriguing.
Although many are speak about our environment, write books on it, and even offer some solutions, almost none really understand the root causes behind environmental issues of concern today.
This lecture is free of charge.
As well Balakhilya das will be teaching one introduction to yoga meditation class, and leading our yoga picnic meditation portion, where participants will learn easy techniques they can take home and apply to there life.
Balakhilya das will speak at the Kelowna Library, 1380 Ellis St., 7 p.m. on June 5, and in Vernon June 7 at the Schubert Center, 3505-30th Ave, at 7 p.m.
