Ambassador Imad Moustapha
Ambassador of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United States

U.S.-Syrian Relations

In its history Syria has played a variety of external roles in the Middle East. Internally, there has been widespread reform and revolution. Since 1976, the Syrian army has played a peacekeeping role in Lebanon in response to the civil war there. However, after the assassination of the Lebanese Prime Minister, Rafik Hariri, the questions about the extent of the influence that the Syrians have in Lebanese politics are growing. These questions have further strained the Syrian relationship with the United States. As a result, U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice recalled Ambassador Margaret Scobey, U.S. Ambassador to Syria. A return date for Ambassador Scobey has not yet been announced. Currently, Syria is preparing to withdraw it military presence from Lebanon in an effort to maintain peace in the region. What is the future of the role of Syria in the Middle East? How do the U.S.-Syrian relations stand today? Join us as we discuss these and other issues with Ambassador Imad Moustapha.
