The University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music presents a concert by Yiddish Princess, a Yiddish rock band fronted by singer/poetess Sarah Gordon and composer Michael Winograd on Sunday, November 14th, 2010 at 9:000pm at The Haven.
Yiddish Princess (http://www.myspace.com/yiddishprincess) is a group of young klezmer and Yiddish musicians from New York City who are creating a new music by welding 1980s synth-based power pop with traditional and newly written songs in the Yiddish language. The six-piece band brings together singer-songwriter Sarah Mina Gordon, daughter of influential Yiddish singer Adrienne Cooper, and performer-composer Michael Winograd, one of the most dynamic forces in klezmer and new Jewish music. Both were born in the 1980s and imbibed from early on the spirit of cultural awakening, joy and vitality that characterized the beginnings of the klezmer revival. Claiming klezmer literally as their first musical language, these charismatic musicians bring a certain naturalness, and an unencumbered and unselfconscious approach as they forge new musical paths for a younger generation.
This is an Arts Enhancement Event supported by the Provost’s Office to increase the awareness of and support for the arts at the University of Virginia. This performance will take place in conjunction with the planned celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Jewish Studies Program and the conference Jewish Renaissance and Renascences, which is supported with Page-Barbour funding and is being organized by the Jewish Studies program in conjunction with Music, CREES, MESALC, History and Religious Studies
