Young Artist Competition

The Scottsdale Musical Arts’ Young Artist Competition is to promote and encourage talented student musicians across the region. Young musicians may compete in one of nine divisions. A jury of regional professional musicians evaluates the competitors. Up to three musicians are selected to perform with the Scottsdale Arts Orchestra. Applying to Compete
• Application form: print form and mail with non-refundable $40 fee to Scottsdale Musical Arts, 16211 N, Scottsdale Rd., A-6-A #453, Scottsdale, AZ 85254.
• Application deadline: Friday February 4, 2011
• Application fee: $40 (non-refundable)
• Eligibility: Instrumental students from age 6 through grade 12 who reside in the state of Arizona.
Divisions (to determine proper division, the competitor's age must be as of the date of the competition)
Primary: ages 6 to 11

Intermediate: ages 11-13

Repertory
• Performers should choose music from classical concert literature.
• Music must be available for rental and/or purchase.
Competition and Judging Procedure
• The competition will be held at La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church, 6300 E. Bell Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85254.
• Each young artist will have 12 minutes to perform. Young Artists may either bring their own accompanist or use the accompanist provided for an additional $50 fee. Young Artists will have 15 minutes to discuss their music with the accompanist. There will be no additional rehearsal time. Movements may be abridged to fit the time limit for the competition.
• Competitors do not need to have their music memorized, however, winners must have their music memorized by March 10.
• Copies of the music should be provided to the judges at the competition: an original copy, with any notated cuts, and two photocopies.
• Judges will look for expressive ability, empathy of musical style, faithfulness to specific indications of the work (tempo, dynamics, phrasing), and technical security.
• Winners may be selected in each of the divisions, but the judges are not obligated to choose a winner in any division. Division winners, as well as three overall winners from different divisions, will be announced via email and posted on the “Scottsdale Musical Arts Website” on February 12.
• The overall winners will perform with the Scottsdale Arts Orchestra on their April 10th, 2011 concert.
• Three overall winners will be awarded a monetary prize of $200 per winner. Division winners will be recognized on the SMA website and announced and recognized at the April 10 concert.
• No recording (audio or visual) is allowed during competition or during the subsequent Orchestra performance.
• Attendance at the competition is free and open to the public.
